About the OH BMV Knowledge Test

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Knowledge Test is required for new drivers applying for a learner’s permit (TIPIC). Here's what you should know:

  • Number of Questions: 40 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections: traffic rules and road signs.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 75% correctly in each section (15/20 per section).
  • Test Duration: Typically completed in 20–30 minutes; no strict time limit.
  • Language Options: Available in English, Spanish, and several other languages.
  • Eligibility: Minimum age is 15½ to take the test for a TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card).
  • Retake Policy: You may retake the test after 24 hours; after multiple failures, additional requirements may apply.
  • Topics Covered: Traffic laws, signs, safe driving practices, and vehicle regulations.
  • Test Locations: Administered at Driver Exam Stations; appointments may be required.
