About the MT MVD Knowledge Test

The Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) requires all new drivers to pass a written knowledge test to obtain a learner license. Here's what you need to know:

  • Number of Questions: 33 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 27 questions correctly (82%) to pass.
  • Test Duration: No official time limit, but most finish within 20–30 minutes.
  • Language Options: Available in English and other languages as needed.
  • Eligibility: Minimum age is 14½ with Driver’s Ed; 16 without.
  • Retake Policy: You may retake the test after 1 day if you fail.
  • Topics Covered: Traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and DUI penalties.
  • Test Locations: Administered at MVD offices or online through approved providers.
