About the ME BMV Knowledge Test

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Knowledge Test is a written exam that evaluates your understanding of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. It's required for all first-time drivers applying for a learner’s permit or license.

  • Number of Questions: 30 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 24 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Test Duration: No strict time limit, but usually completed in under 30 minutes.
  • Language Options: Available in English and other languages by request.
  • Eligibility: Minimum age is 15 with completion of an approved driver’s education course.
  • Retake Policy: You may retake the test after a short waiting period if you fail.
