About the IN BMV Knowledge Exam

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Knowledge Exam is a written test required to obtain a learner’s permit or driver’s license. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Number of Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions (34 on road rules, 16 on road signs).
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 28 of the 34 road rules questions and 14 of the 16 road sign questions correctly.
  • Test Duration: No strict time limit, but typically completed in 20–30 minutes.
  • Language Options: English, Spanish, and other supported languages.
  • Eligibility: Must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in driver education.
  • Retake Policy: If failed, you must wait until the next business day to retest.
  • Topics Covered: Indiana traffic laws, road signs, driving safety, and penalties.
  • Test Locations: Administered at BMV branches across Indiana.
