About the NM MVD Knowledge Test

The New Mexico MVD Knowledge Test is a written exam that all new drivers must pass to obtain a learner’s permit. Here's what you need to know before taking it:

  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 18 questions correctly (72%) to pass.
  • Test Duration: No official time limit, but generally completed in about 20 minutes.
  • Language Options: Available in English and Spanish.
  • Eligibility: Minimum age is 15 with enrollment in a Driver’s Ed program.
  • Retake Policy: If you fail, you may retake the test after a waiting period, often the next day.
  • Topics Covered: Road signs, New Mexico traffic laws, safe driving practices, and license restrictions.
  • Test Locations: Administered at MVD field offices and some approved third-party providers.
