About the MA RMV Knowledge Test

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Knowledge Test is a written exam required for all new drivers applying for a learner’s permit. It assesses your understanding of the rules of the road and safe driving practices.

  • Number of Questions: 25 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 18 questions correctly (72%) to pass.
  • Test Duration: 25 minutes.
  • Language Options: Offered in over 30 languages including English and Spanish.
  • Eligibility: Minimum age is 16 to apply for a learner’s permit.
  • Retake Policy: If you fail, you must wait at least 24 hours before retaking.
  • Topics Covered: Road signs, speed limits, penalties, and right-of-way laws.
  • Test Locations: Available online or at approved RMV service centers.
