About the DC DMV Knowledge Test

The DC DMV Knowledge Test is required for all new drivers seeking a learner’s permit or driver’s license. Here's what you need to know:

  • Number of Questions: 25 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 20 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Test Duration: You are allowed up to 60 minutes to complete the test.
  • Language Options: Offered in English, Amharic, Arabic, Cantonese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.
  • Eligibility: Applicants for a Washington, D.C. driver license who are at least 16 years old and applying for a learner permit or new driver license.
  • Retake Policy: You must wait 3 calendar days before retaking the knowledge test.s; fees may apply.
  • Topics Covered: Traffic laws and regulations, Road signs and signals, Safe driving practices, Vehicle operation and control, Alcohol and drug laws, Sharing the road with others (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.), Parking rules, and Emergency situations and defensive driving.
  • Test Locations: Offered at all DMV Service Centers on a first-come, first-serve basis. and online through authorized providers. Knowledge testing is now available virtually and via a local Test Proctoring Center, with the exception of motorcycle and CDL knowledge tests. An appointment is required to take the test virtually and at the Test Proctoring Center. Virtual testing is only available specifically for the standard and the Graduated License Program (GRAD) (16-20 years old) knowledge tests. A language line is available to those who cannot (or have limited capacity to) speak, read, or write English.
